YouTubing Whitman

Back in the day I used to edit Anime Music Videos (AMVs) and throw them up on YouTube. I liked to cut up the clips and match them to some dope songs, usually of the Underground Hip-Hop variety, but not always. Problem was I never watched too much anime and as a result, most of my videos used the same 3 or 4 anime shows, and I kinda lost inspiration to keep making videos eventually. Still, I got a nice little number of online fans from it. It has been a while since I edited anything, but I decided to edit a video for this assignment, and I also slid a song I made underneath my recital of the Whitman lines I chose.
Editing this took me way too long, and reminded me of why I don't really edit anymore :P

-The video footage is from a show called Samurai Champloo. It is directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, who is probably my favorite director ever.

My username on YouTube is suckafish80. It comes from a combination of the stupidest idea for a username I could think of ('suckafish'... a fish that is also a sucka) and being a fan of Jerry Rice as a kid (#80).

  1. What other anime series did you like? Have you heard of "Cowboy Bebop"? I love the soundtrack with its jazz focus.

Also, do you have any music recommendations? I know that that's really broad, haha. Something similar to the Nujabes' "Aruarian Dance" or "Modal Soul"?

    Appreciate it!

    1. Oh shiiiit, that's crazy cuz the two anime I edited most were Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop... They were both directed by the same dude, and he also has another series coming out soon and it's going to have a Jazz focus as well. Also, the new show's soundtrack will be composed by Yoko Kanno, the lady who did all the Bebop soundtracks, so... I'm exited.
As for recommendations, I can't think of too many people who sounded like Nujabes, but you should check out a remix that someone did of 2Pac's "Happy Home" where they replaced the original instrumental with Nujabes's "Aruarian Dance." It's beautiful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lx2ep-tN5g

Here's some recommendations... If you ever get really really bored and have a lot of time on your hands, you can listen to them, since the list got long quick... my bad. (For future reference, it's not a good idea though to get me started on music, because I won't stop):

Blue Sky Black Death - Days Are Years
      Binary Star - Reality Check
      RJD2 - Ghostwriter
      RJD2 - Smoke & Mirrors
Will Sessions - One Love Instrumental
      Zion-I - Bird's Eye View
      Zion-I - Doin' My Thang
Murs & Danger Mouse - Paint By Numbers
      CunninLynguists - Lynguistics
      CunninLynguists - Stars Shine Brightest
      CunninLynguists - Mexico
      The Seatbelts - Fingers
People Under The Stairs - San Francisco Knights
      Common - Cloth
Ty & Breis - Right Here In Front Of You
      Binary Star - New Hip-Hop
      Cyne - Haze

Okay that's enough... You should be able to just copy each line and slap it on a YouTube search to be successful. There's a lot, so you can just pick out whichever ones sound the best from glancing at the Artist/Title... You can't go wrong with any of them, all these songs are ✔+++, to me at least.

  2. Yeah let's just say that I didn't get very much sleep when I discovered Cowboy Bebop... Yoko Kanno is perfect in "The Real Folk Blues". Wikipedia has Sakamichi no Apollon coming out in April. Hm, I don't know if I'll be blogging much then... :)

That 2Pac/Nujabes mix is crazyyy good. It kills me when people get sloppy and just slap stuff together, but things like this help me keep my faith in remixes. This reminds me of the moment my high school debate coach introduced me to Danger Mouse's 'Grey Album'. He is also responsible for introducing me to Handsome Boy Modeling School's 'A Day in the Life'.

Jun Seba was definitely a genius. I also really like "Feather" and "Thank You"... so many great songs.

Lol, I should have known better than to ask because I can't stop myself from listening. I actually tend to go through phases when it comes to music. This doesn't mean that I stop liking songs, but that I usually focus on one genre at a time. For example, in high school I listened to everything from bhangra (this isn't as great as 2Pac/Nujabes, but it's Jay Z/Panjabi MC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wke0-lj2wzw) to Deftones and Nine Inch Nails or trip-hop like Zero 7 and Morcheeba. I have a lot of friends to thank for introducing me to a lot of great music.

Anyways, I really appreciate you taking the time to list all of those songs out. I have the list saved and don't be surprised if you see it tied to Whitman in some way, haha.

    1. You're right about them lazy remixers. Only reason I listened to that one is because it was uploaded by someone I trust when it comes to Hip-Hop. And Danger Mouse is no joke. It's crazy how well he does in all the genres he dabbles in nowadays. I especially liked The Good, The Bad, and The Queen album he did when it comes to his non-Hip-Hop stuff. And when I was a kid I grew up on a lot of Gangsta Rap, but a lot of 60s music too from my parents, so I love the Beatles and loved The Grey Album.
Your old debate teacher sounds like one cool dude! I loved Handsome Boy Modeling school. Dan the Automator is one of my producer heroes and I currently have the instrumental to A Day In The Life as one of my ringtones on my ghetto-ass phone. It all comes in full-circle now since Danger Mouse replaced Dan the Automator as the producer for The Gorillaz, and Automator worked with Chino Moreno from the Deftones on that Handsome Boy project, and the blending of styles on that Jay-Z track is like an audio version of what Watanabe does when he directs his anime. And also, Jun Seba worked with CYNE, the last artist on my recommendation list, on that Feather track.
      Full circle, see?... No?
      No.
      But I tried.
      And April will soon come.

  3. Full circle like Whitman to grass to our lungs, man :) It's amazing that you can remember all of those details and make it all connect.

Thanks again for all of the recommendations!
