Tweet-A-Week: Martin F. Tupper

Martin Farquhar Tupper (1810-1889) was a dude. He wrote poetry, and notably wrote Proverbial Philosophy, A Book of Thoughts and Arguments, which was a book about thoughts and arguments. He dropped knowledge over the pages, while other authors just clumsily spilled knowledge (I stole that one from Immortal Technique). Why do I say he dropped knowledge instead of spilled? He wrote the book in prose, but not necessarily sticking to any traditional poetry form either. He wrote in what would today be called free-verse, which is what Whitman liked to do as we've seen in Leaves of Grass. He was a bit of a pioneer in that sense and no doubt influenced writers of the future.(Whitman called him "a rare man of our time.")

In a contemporary review of Whitman's 1860/1861 version of Leaves of Grass, one reviewer notes:

Can it be possible that Mr. Tupper's "Proverbial Philosophy" has inspired Mr. Walt Whitman with the idea of his Leaves? We have most of us probably heard and read of persons who solved mathematical problems or composed poetry while asleep; and we think it just possible that the author of "Proverbial Philosophy" may unconsciously, while suffering from a fit of the nightmare, have had something to do with the composition of these American Leaves. At least we trace in them some wild fantastic resemblance to his style; such as to make us pretty sure that Mr. Whitman has occasionally "tasted the simple store and rested one soothing hour" with the English poetaster whose words we quote.

The reviewer notes how similar the writing styles are, and finishes the review by saying that "Sense, grammar, and metre are but very minor parts in the composition of poetry; but nevertheless, pace Walt Whitman, poetry cannot exist without this humble triad."

He's basically saying poetry needs sense, grammar, and meter in order to exist.

Walt and Martin's response?:
You know which one Whitman be!

  1. That picture is hilarious.

Here's a link to all of the tracks from the "Leaves of Grass" CD by Fred Hersch. Enjoy! :)

    1. Thanks, but I don't see a link :(
I caught a typo of myself in a previous post. I think Hanley's typos are subconsciously affecting us all.

  2. No, in this case it is karma. Hanley might have fixed his numbering on the assignment post (adding in the "2"), but not before I took a screenshot of it. You know, for future generations to remember ;)

    There ya go :)

(Just let me know if you want the screenshot too, haha.)

    1. Haha, he said his number '2' on his Mac didn't work... Yeah, I kinda don't buy that. (You're still my boy though, Hanley!)
Anyway, I really hate to do this, as it might appear as double-karma or whatever, but the files are all .cda files, which are all like 44 bytes in size (which is really tiny and not big enough to hold any audio information), and I don't think they are of much use unless you have the actual CD in your CD drive. The .cda files are like 'shortcut' directories to the files on the CD, like the way the shortcuts on your computer's desktop don't really hold any information, they just link up to the spot on your hard drive that does has all the info. You might have just copied and uploaded the files that showed up when you clicked on the CD in your computer, as opposed to ripping them onto the computer to create their own mp3s (or whatever file type you usually rip music as), or maybe you just uploaded the wrong set of files.
If you don't want to go through all the trouble of ripping/uploading the CD though, it's all good... I don't want it to be an extra thing for you to have on your plate if you are busy or short on time. Thanks a lot- a lot, I appreciate it, either way! Really...

  3. I just got schooled.

And no, the second time around wasn't karma. This time it's recording company voodoo meant to keep people from doing this kind of 'ripping' ;) But what can I say? I'm from the Napster/Kazaa/Bearshare/Limewire generation. (Do you remember any of those names?)

^ Bam! I don't mind uploading them because I know you'll add some sick beats and make them even better than they already are. :)

Btw, did you just change your background? Wasn't it black before? Now it's some little girl being abducted by eight balloons while a member of the Blue Man Group walks by all nonchalant and shit. What gives?

    1. I'm definitely familiar with those names, and they all hold a special place in my heart... except for Bearshare. I never used that one. Didn't like their logo.

Thank you so much. You uploaded these songs for me, you offered me a snack during our last class... you are too cool and kind. I OWE YOU A SNACK. Anytime, any food group, IT'S YOURS.
If I do make a beat out of one of the songs, I will name it Iona's Song, but only if it turns out very, very good.

And yeah my background used to be this famous graffiti piece which I love called "Crime In The City" by this dude named Skeme but it was too wide for it to really be seen on just the edges of the blog. Your description of my new one is pretty close, lol... Nah, it's actually a piece by Banksy that he put up on the Israeli West Bank wall. The lady in the picture is just some Palestinian woman who happened to be walking by, but the girl floating with the balloons shows his disdain of the wall by having her floating above the imprisonment the wall creates. I'm a bit politically-minded, so this new background was just my subtle way of making myself happy without being too blatant and shoving my politics "down the throats of those for whom it has no connection or resonance." ;)

If you ARE curious though, here's a link to an article about it which has all the pieces (including this one) he put up on the wall. I think it was one of the most defiant, beautiful, heartbreaking, and awesome displays of art ever:

  4. Really? Everything except Bearshare? I LOOOVED their cute little bear with his badly-superimposed green headphones :)

Hm...you might not think I'm so "cool and kind" when I send out this email I'm writing to everyone in the Levine group :)

Oh man... I don't know how I missed that the woman was wearing a hijab... goodness. I'm actually not surprised that you "a bit politically-minded". :) I personally appreciate rap and hip-hop because I believe that they are powerful artistic vehicles for social justice. I'm still going through the list of songs that you gave me and these lines from Cyne's "Haze" always get me: "We're gonna kill it with the spirit of change, I be the only brother fanning the flames." Straight to the heart, you know? (And nice insertion of the quote from the Levine interview, lol. I think we're all really gonna like this guy).

Now it's my turn to thank YOU for the link to Banksy's art. I really love the tow-truck taking away the tank and all the images that include parts of the wall where people have written their own words like "we want peace". So clean, so simple, so poignant. *Bookmarks the article*

    1. lol, the "cute little bear" just didn't match the illegality of what I would do with the program though!

Now I'm VERY curious as to what you could be sending to all of us now... And it will be bugging me the rest of the day, haha. I really doubt it will change my opinion of you.

And there are days where all I can listen to are politically influenced songs, lol. Most of the stuff on the list I gave you were on the laid-back side of Hip-Hop in terms of beats and lyrics, aside from that Cyne song and the Paint By Numbers song, but some of my favorite political stuff is a lot more abrasive... FIRE! haha... I'm really glad you enjoyed those Banksy pics :)
